Myths, Moons & Mountains

Solo Exhibition

Hannah Nowlan

Modern Times, Fitzroy, VIC

MAY 2017

‘Myths, Moons and Mountains’ depicts bold shapes, overlapping planes of glazed colour, fragmented form and subtle strokes of texture. This is an exciting new path for the Melbourne artist.

  • Emerging artist Hannah Nowlan presents her first solo exhibition since graduation from VCA in 2015, ‘Myths, Moons and Mountains’. Working out of her home-based studio in Black Rock, Victoria, Hannah has been developing her work through experimentation with materials and considerations of the coastal landscape.

In late 2016, Hannah developed her earlier ‘Geometric’ abstraction series after her engagement in an artistic residency program at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Fine Art, Portugal. While Hannah’s art has always paid homage to the rugged yet tranquil atmosphere of Victoria’s coastline, Hannah’s practice now further draws on these elements and new motifs discovered through her artistic travels in Portugal and Spain.

Remaining anchored in her connection with her hometown of Black Rock, Hannah’s new paintings encompass a connection with the Portuguese coastal town of Nazaré. Where mythological narratives and ancient legends allow Hannah to create a primitive language that speaks directly of person and place.

‘Myths, Moons and Mountains’ depicts bold shapes, overlapping planes of glazed colour, fragmented form and subtle texture strokes. This is an exciting new path for the Melbourne artist.
